New Search Engine from Hiawatha Island Software Improves Speed and Relevancy with Metadata

CONCORD, NH – March 14, 2001 - Hiawatha Island Software, Inc. (HiSoftware) today released Hi-Search™, a new metadata-only search engine technology that yields significantly faster and more accurate matches than today’s full text search engines. Hi-Search operates independently or in conjunction with full-text search engines and portals. It is the first search tool to provide database-like, “fielded” searches for all metadata- and XML-packaged documents on a network, an intranet or the Internet.

“Hi-Search™ offers significant benefits over full-text searching alone. It connects people with the information they need faster, yielding fewer but far more precise matches in a fraction of the time it takes to conduct a full text search. Secondly, Hi-Search makes it possible to conduct a metadata search across a network for metadata enhanced resources that normally could not be indexed, such as image, audio and video files,” said Robert B. Yonaitis, President and CEO of HiSoftware.

Federal agency The National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) http://www.nbii.gov, a pioneer in the application of metadata for increasing access to data and information on the nation's biological resources, plans to use Hi-Search to provide quick searches on non-textual information, such as images, on its FrogWeb site, http://www.frogweb.org.

According to Mike Frame, NBII’s Technology Director, “We believe Hi-Search will greatly enhance the experience of our government users and the public by providing richer, more accurate matches when searching our stored biological information. Hi-Search will allow us to do dynamic browse trees of this information based on the work we have done in the past in putting both ‘traditional’ and NBII-specific metatags on all of our NBII pages.”

Key features of Hi-Search include:

  • Rapid Fielded Search

  • Support for Web Documents, Microsoft Office Documents, & XML Packages

  • Automated Scheduling

  • HTML Index Builder

  • XML Catalog Builder

  • Web Search Interface Support
