State of Arizona Selects HiSoftware’s TagGen to Boost Effectiveness of Pilot Arizona GILS Web Site - Metadata Tagging Solution Improves Quality and Quantity of GILS Search Engine Results

CONCORD, NH – March 26, 2001 -- Hiawatha Island Software Company, Inc. (“HiSoftware”), a leader in search and discovery solutions, today announced that the State of Arizona is using its TagGen® metadata tagging software to enhance the quality and quantity of search results for the pilot Government Information Locator Service (GILS) web site, Find-It! Arizona. The Arizona GILS project is a partnership of state agencies, the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records, and public and university libraries across Arizona.

Already established in over 20 states, GILS gathers information across government web sites, allowing citizens and state agencies to search for information without needing to know which agency provides the information or service. A GILS-specialized search engine provide more relevant search results than full text search engines because it looks for metatags, which index the content of a web page, and displays metatagged documents near the top of the search results. GILS also provides subject categories as an alternative search method for users who prefer to browse for information.

“TagGen helped us jumpstart the Find-It! Arizona project by proving a simple, very effective method to index library and state agency content with rich GILS metadata.  Tested in the summer and brought up in Fall 2000, it was the only solution we found that supported the GILS metadata schema without requiring extensive customization. We can automatically apply metatags across multiple files and directories. As a result, we have dramatically increased both the content and relevancy of information being accessed through Find-It! Arizona,” said Susan Alden, Library Consultant at the Arizona State Library and Project Manager for the Arizona GILS project.

Once the pilot project is complete in June 2001, it will be considered as a link from the State of Arizona Web Portal, currently under development.
