Metadata Brings Knowledge Management Full
Circle
The concepts behind metadata have
been tested and refined over time, bringing knowledge management methods
full circle to an automated metadata system. Earliest knowledge
management efforts began with the card catalog that allowed library users
to look up an item by title, author, or subject. Other methods of
knowledge management have since included taxonomy, which is a hierarchal
classification system that was first applied to living things, and
full-text crawling. The cards in the catalog are now called meta tags, and
the information on the cards is called metadata. Finally, metadata
implementation becomes automated with the founding of HiSoftware Metadata
Server by Robert B. Yonaitis. HiSoftware Metadata Server combines the
concepts of the card catalog with taxonomy and full-text searching, and
manages metadata for all electronic files.
